Rediscovering Creativity: My Thrifting and Upcycling Journey
Creativity has always been at the heart of who I am—a way to transform the ordinary into something extraordinary. I’m Gigi Smith, the creator behind Eclectikx, and my journey through thrifting and upcycling is more than just a love for vintage fashion; it’s a revival of self-expression, sustainability, and cultural storytelling.
Growing up in West LA, just off Melrose Avenue, in the ‘80s, ‘90s, and early 2000s, I was immersed in a world of bold street style, underground fashion, and urban creativity. The thrift stores, punk rock influence, hip-hop aesthetics, and high-low fashion mix shaped my sense of style. Every weekend, I’d dig through racks of secondhand clothes, searching for that perfect oversized jacket, distressed denim, or vintage tee to make my own. But my inspiration didn’t stop there—being Mexican and Black, and spending my summers in Mexico, I was constantly exposed to vibrant colors, handcrafted textiles, and the resourcefulness of upcycling long before it became trendy. These experiences gave me a unique perspective on blending cultures, eras, and artistic traditions into my creative process.

Through Eclectikx, I’m reclaiming my creative spirit—turning thrifted and forgotten pieces into something fresh, expressive, and full of life. From revamping vintage clothing to upcycling furniture, shoes, and even everyday objects like jars and garden décor, I embrace an eclectic mix of fashion, sustainability, and urban artistry. Each transformation is a reflection of my roots, my experiences, and my love for storytelling through style.
But this isn’t just about fashion—it’s a way of life. As an herbalist, I also explore natural living, holistic practices, and mindful consumption. Whether I’m repurposing thrifted fabrics into home décor, sewing by hand or machine, or experimenting with glue-gun crafting, I believe in creating with intention.
On my blog and YouTube channel, I document my journey—sharing upcycling tutorials, personal reflections, and a look into the cultural influences that shaped me. And through my Mercari shop, I offer one-of-a-kind pieces, each made with love, history, and a touch of nostalgia.
Eclectikx is about more than just upcycling—it’s about reimagining the past, reclaiming creativity, and redefining what’s possible. Join me as I breathe new life into old treasures and celebrate the artistry of transformation.
